The Battlestar Galactica Controversy, AKA- There Are Geeks And Then There Are Fucking-Retardo Dorketrons.

So, I finally got around to seeing the Battlestar Galactica Miniseries. I was, for lack of a better term, blown-away. If you haven't seen it you really need to. Even if you aren't into Science Fiction. It's just great television and further proof that cinema is really the weaker medium for storytelling. I'm now totally hooked and really need to get seasons 1 and 2 of the series, which follows said miniseries. Yet, I'm not without my complaints. I know this shocks all of you.

I was watching the added features on the miniseries DVD, the "making of" documentary, to be specific. During the documentary we get to see interviews with Richard Hatch (the original Apollo), Dirk Benedict (the original Starbuck) and about three-thousand nerds from San Diego Comicon. Hatch, Benedict and about two-thousand of the noted nerds all bemoan the fact that "Boomer," and "Starbuck" are now portrayed by female actors. Let's dissect this:

1- The Battlestar Geriatrica problem- In the cases of Hatch and Benedict, dudes, you were never going to be re-cast in the same roles. It's been 27 years since Battlestar was originally on TV. Not that you have no place in the series but, Christ, you can't possibly expect that a studio is gonna blow the bankroll on two guys who, for all we know, are going to die of natural causes in the next few months. You ain't getting lead roles if you're old as hell, unless you're Edward James Olmos and, therefore, awesome.

2- The Battlestar Gaylactica issue- Those who have a problem with Boomer and Starbuck being girls obviously believe that Hatch and Benedict were much better looking than the two fine-ass women replacing them. These same people are probably upset that the cute little Han Solo outfits that Boomer, Apollo and Starbuck used to wear are no longer available at fetish shops. This demographic needs to get more into Edward James Olmos and less into Liza Minelli anyhow.

3- People are morons.

As if this weren't enough, I was speaking with a fellow nerd, Chad, today. I mentioned that I had discovered Battlestar and he stated "sucks doesn't it?" I replied, "You're simultaneously wrong and an idiot." The conversation went downhill from there.

Chad did not have any ill feelings towards the presence of women, however. Chad did not like that the Cylons are newly designed. Chad, apparently, prefers the original design; which consists of extras awkwardly crammed into rubber and aluminum costumes, bouncing off the walls on their way to battle. This is far superior to the latter generation. See for yourself:
